چکیده
آیا هیوم می‌کوشید بشریت را به تمامه از یوغ دین و گرایشات دینی رها سازد؟ اغلب چنین می‌انگارند. مقالة حاضر ضمن بیان مناقشه-برانگیز‌بودن فرض رایج، می‌خواهد نشان دهد رویکرد هیوم نسبت به حضور دین در زندگی آدمی، لااقل در شکل حداقلی و ناگزیر آن، یک رویکرد خوش‌بینانه است. زیرا این فیلسوف، در درجة نخست، بلند‌پروازی برای تنزیة به تمامة بشریت از تمام اشکال دین را، به عنوان مثالی ناگوار از خیره‌سری فلسفی، رها کرده است. ثانیاً، به رغم ملاحظات طبیعت‌گرایانة هیوم درخصوص منشاء و ریشه‌های دین تنها راه ما در برابر منشاء، علل و محرِّک دین نوعی سکوت و یا پذیرش منفعلانة آن نیست. دو فقرة متأخر چیزی است که ما از آن با عنوان خوش‌بینی معتدل هیوم نسبت به حضور دین در زندگی آدمی یاد کرده‌ایم.
