The answer to the question of the meaning of life has been the concern of many philosophers and thinkers. Some like Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, and Sartre have not given any meaning to life. But many others have tried to give different answers to this question and show with arguments that their point of view can better explain the meaning of life. This paper intends to first show the main viewpoints proposed in this field (such as God-centeredness, soul-centeredness, naturalism, subjectivism, and objectivism) along with their arguments and criticisms from competing viewpoints. Then, by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of these views, it should be shown what characteristics a comprehensive theory for the meaning of life should have. Finally, the comprehensive and new viewpoint of the author will be presented and the reasons for preferring this perspective over competing views will be shown.

Property emergentism as a new and advanced theory than materialism and physicalism and having more correspondent with sciences such as physics, neurology and biology, in spite of the acceptance of mental states, powers and casuality denies the immaterial subestance of soul / mind , and ultimately depends the mind and mental states to the body and its components and functions as a hole; that means it considers mental states as dependent properties on the interactions of the nervous system and the network components . These emergentists are classified into two group in considering free will: some see it as an emergent property and as a character of the whole nervous system and body parts network , but the other denies free will despite their accepting other mental and subjective properties . But we can provide intellectual reasons and scientific evidence on the rejection of both view and then we review and criticize these property emergentist views and prove existence of immaterial soul/mind through the existence of free will.

The meaningfulness of life and a desire to immortality has occupied the probe mind for a long time. Belief in the life after death and immortality have a significant role in the human interpretation of meaninglessness of life. Mulla Sadra, based on his philosophical system and foundations such as soul abstraction, substantive movement, physical occurrence of soul and its spiritual survival, and by offering a different and seminal explanation of the phenomenon of death, raised the idea that the its exact understanding verifies the linkage between belief in the immortality of soul and the meaningfulness of life. Mulla Sadra has chosen a philosophical approach to prove the immortality of human soul and, its impact on the issue of meaningfulness is quite significant. considering immortality and meaning in life in his opinion, faith, rationality and morality are colsely associated. In this paper, applying a descriptive analysis, the important components of a meaningful and eternal life are examined and the role of belief in the immortality of soul, in the meaningfulness of life is elaborated according to the principles of Sadraee wisdom.

There are two theories among dualists who believe that soul is immortal with body: ‘recreation theory’ and ‘new body theory’. According to recreation theory, soul is immortal and the very earthy body will be recreated in the next world. According to the new body theory, humans have a body and a soul. Soul is immaterial, and is our personal identity. Since soul is immortal it is possible that soul continues living with the same earthy body or the other body in the other world. Gazzali and Swinburne both take new body theory but there are some differences. They both believe that soul is immortal, however for Swinburne this immortality isn’t innate and God gives the soul immortality whereas Gazzali asserts that soul is immortal in itself though God can stop its existing.
